In Ethiopia, land degradation is the most serious environmental problem. Pollution, especially of water, is low but increasing fast. Land degradation is caused by a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors, the chief among which is the rugged nature of the terrain and the removal of vegetation cover for crop cultivation and for grazing. |

| Consequently, the tilling of land and overgrazing have caused a number of environmental problems such as soil erosion, and the disruption of the hydrological cycle exacerbating both flooding in the rainy season and desiccation in the dry season.
