This is direct translation of the summary part of the Forests of Sheka book for the local people consumption.

Proceeding of consultative workshop on conservation of Sheka Forest

This is the proceedings of the conference held in June, 2007 at Sheka zone Masha woreda with clan leader, relegion leaders, government officials and other stakeholders.

In Ethiopia, land degradation is the most serious environmental problem. Pollution, especially of water, is low but increasing fast. Land degradation is caused by a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors, the chief among which is the rugged nature of the terrain and the removal of vegetation cover for crop cultivation and for grazing.

Consequently, the tilling of land and overgrazing have caused a number of environmental problems such as soil erosion, and the disruption of the hydrological cycle exacerbating both flooding in the rainy season and desiccation in the dry season. It also causes the loss of both biomass and biodiversity.  more reading
