Seed Workshop at Kombolcha

Awareness raising workshop on the significance of conserving farmers variety seed diversity and to say "No GMO-seeds" was held in Kombolcha town, about 370 kms North of Addis Ababa, on 22 December 2007. 38 participants (4 females and 34 males) drawn from farmers of Harbu and Wereillu, Zonal and district level governmental officials, research institutes and NGO's working around Harbu , were in attendance of the workshop.

The workshop was organized with the collaboration of Ethiopian Organic seed Action (EOSA), a local NGO that is working around Harbu area.

Major objective of the workshops has been strengthening the ongoing national campaigns on seed diverse and GMO-Free Zones to ensure seed security and food sovereignty through conserving farmers’ variety seeds.

Five papers entitled:

  • Significance of Harbu in PGR (Parent Genetic Resource) and Ethiopian Organic Seed Action (EOSA) Contribution, (By Dr. Bayoush Tsegaye EOSA's Project officer),
  • Farmers’ Variety Seed Conservation for Seed Security and Food Sovereignty (by Dr. Melaku Worede, MELCA Mahiber Board President),
  • The Adverse Effects of Globalization on Agriculture and Cultural Biodiversity in Africa
  • Legal and Policy Frame Works on Farmers’ Rights in Ethiopia, and ;
  • GMOs Concept and Motives: Impacts on Seed Security and Food Sovereignty, (by Mr. Gebremedhine Birega);  presented and discussed accordingly.
